1994-1999: By this time Unnayan had earned some goodwill by its
philanthropic activities and there was a shift in its approach
to developmental work. Though it had not totally discarded the
charitable activities, it recognized that development is a
process and process orientation was reflected in its activities.
The major programmes and activities that bear the testimony of
this are on Increasing female literacy
Health and Family welfare
Health education
Small family norm
Developing IEC materials for community awareness
Workshops on strengthening Panchayat system
AIDS awareness programmes
Teachers training on strengthening culture and value in
education
Skill development on sabai craft, minor forest produce for
income generation
Savings and credit programme among women by forming
self-help-groups, rural sanitation etc.
The agencies that extended support for these programmes were

District Rural Development Agency of Mayurbhanj, Unicef

2000-2006: It was towards the end of nineties, post-super
cyclone may be taken as reference period, when Unnayan began to
focus on its role as an implementing and facilitating agency
directing its resources towards a sustainable community
empowerment process. In the process it has been able to create a
vertical social capital in certain fields of intervention.
Addressing livelihood issues integrated with social issues
through a process of self-help has been the focus of our
programmes during this phase. Following are the major highlights
of our programmes during this phase:

Establishing an all women puffedrice producers and marketing
cooperative
Sustainable livelihood generation for rural artisans by
promotion of goldengrass craft

Agricultural promotion by forming water users association
Establishing community peace and harmony by creating cadres of
women peace corps(Mahila Shanti Sena)
Setting up a maternity center to address the issues pertaining
to reproductive and child health
Total sanitation campaign
